Every engagement is quoted in writing before any work starts. Here is how each kind is shaped, so the quote holds no surprises.
Build-operate-transfer
- Build: by milestone or by month
- Operate: a monthly fee with written service levels
- Transfer: a price set in advance, with an early-transfer price for every point in the term
- A deposit and payment before work protect both sides
Fractional CTO
- A monthly retainer for a set amount of time
- Extra time only by agreement, approved first
- Month to month, 30 days' notice
- Equity for part of the fee may be possible for startups
Consulting
- A fixed price for a defined review, with written findings
- Or a monthly retainer for ongoing technical leadership
- Scope and price written down first
Custom development
- A fixed quote for a well-defined scope
- Or a monthly arrangement for work that is still being discovered
- Estimates, not promises, on timing
